Principal's Message

I would like to welcome all of our new students and families to Garfield Middle School and welcome back our 7th and 8th graders and their families.  I’d like to say a big thank you to all of our Garfield community who helped kick the school year off smoothly.  Thank you to our  wonderful PTSA and office staff who prepared all of the packets of information for families, the students who helped with orientation, and all the Garfield staff members who attended orientation and helped get our new students acclimated to their new school.  This kind of collaboration and team effort is so vital to student success as we strive for high academic achievement.

During orientation I emphasized to our students and families the importance of having a strong work ethic.  Each year the expectations for student learning increases and with that is the need to make sure academics are the focus.   The staff at Garfield is committed to helping each student make growth as indicated by our “A” value-added grade we achieved last year.  To continue making sure all students make the necessary growth it will take hard work.  This means checking your planner nightly, keeping up on homework, participating in class to the fullest, seeking help when needed, and checking Progressbook continuously.   It may seem cliché to say it “takes a village to raise a child,” but this saying is so true.  It takes the teachers, staff members, parents, and the child themselves to put forth a strong work ethic and work together to achieve excellence.

I look forward to another great year working together to help our children reach their highest potential.

Mr. Walter
